When you have three classes all trying to do the same thing, two of them are going to be inferior. This simply cannot be avoided, the best you can do is make it so people don't mind which they bring. In my view, we have that. I don't care if I have a Warrior, a Dervish or an Assassin in my group. Whilst I would usually prefer the Assassin, all three kill things quickly and serve as a decent platform for buffs.
All three are strong and all three can bring the absurd defense skill known as Save Yourselves.

Not necessarily, because it's not as simple as "hurr durr, I hit harder". There's single target damage vs melee AoE, for example. Then there's utility. Then there's also survivability. Slightly different combinations of these three things would allow each of the melee professions to be useful in their own way.

Innate survivability is not much of a consideration. In a good team it isn't even something you should consider. You want your physicals to kill shit and the Assassin kills shit the fastest. They provide the best platform for buffing and their AoE capabilities are excellent in combination with MoP and Death Blossom. They also get to bring Save Yourselves.

There are very few situations where this approach won't work.

The ele might die. But he took your team down with him. I'd like to see the penetration against SY. That would be funny.
